So, what is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and improve function. This is done by inserting sterilized, stainless-steel needles (that are as fine as a human hair) into specific points located near or on the surface of the skin which has the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to treat a wide variety of illnesses.

Traditional Oriental Medicine views a person as an energy system in which body and mind are unified, each influencing and balancing the other. Unlike Western Medicine which attempts to isolate and separate a disease from a person, Oriental Medicine emphasizes a holistic approach that treats the whole person.

We will make an Oriental medical diagnosis based upon a thorough examination and consultation. The examination includes the assessment of the pulse and tongue. Once a diagnosis is made, we will choose the most appropriate acupuncture points for treatment.

The basic foundation for Oriental Medicine is that there is a life energy flowing through the body which is called ‘Qi’ (pronounced chee). This energy flows through the body in channels known as meridians that connect all of our major organs. According to Oriental Medical theory, illness arises when the cyclical flow of Qi in the meridians becomes unbalanced or is blocked.

Acupuncture points are areas of designated electrical sensitivity that have been shown to be effective in the treatment of specific health problems. These points have been mapped out by the Chinese acupuncturists over a period of more than 2000 years.

Acupuncture is recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to be effective in the treatment of a wide variety of medical problems.

A little History of Acupuncture in San Antonio

acupuncture for weight lossWhen you type in Acupuncture San Antonio you usually don’t think about the history of this ancient medicine and how it was established in our beloved state of Texas and our city of San Antonio.

In 1984 we saw the first regulation of acupuncture medicine in Texas.
In 1993 Acupuncture is established as a licensed profession by the Texas state board of examiners.

Texas Health and Science University was founded as the Texas Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1990 and in 1994 it was the first university in Texas approved by Texas State Board of Acupuncture Examiners to teach alternative medicine.

Along came also AOMA from which Guadalupe graduated from, which was founded 1993.

How does Acupuncture benefit athletes?

Athletes and acupuncture is similar to bread and butter they go well together. I’m sure most of you probably heard of famous athletes such as basketball star Kobe Bryant and NFL star Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers using this ancient therapy. But today we are going to talk in detail of how it benefits these athletes from all types of sports.

Reducing inflammation

Acupuncture studies such as the one made in South Korea in Kyung Hee University, which shows anti-inflammatory effects and cytokine regulation caused by Electroacupuncture. Reducing inflammation is very beneficial for athletes to perform at their highest levels.

Acupuncture improves blood circulation

Well known research has shown needle therapy improving blood circulation, which in return helps healing and recovery with areas in the body such as tendons and ligaments. As we all know these areas and others of the body are crucial for athletes to stay injury free and performing at peak levels. In Chinese medicine when blood doesn’t circulate it’s called stagnation, this happens when there is not enough energy to move the blood.

Fixes muscle imbalances

Around 65 percent of sport injuries come from repetitive use of joints making does joints dysfunctional by acquiring muscle imbalances. Acupuncture corrects these imbalances by inserting needles into motor points and specific acupuncture points to release tight segments of myofascial tissues.

Improves sleep

Research has shown that therapy can improve quality sleep which is crucial to athletes that run, jump and collide with one another such as in football.

Chronic Stress is no match for Acupuncture

Every athlete knows how stress can destroy performance. In a study performed at Georgetown University it showed that this great therapy drastically reduced a protein in rats linked to chronic stress. The great effects lasted 4 days, compared that to pill popping that usually last a few hours and the results are outstanding!

Just look at the benefits of good ole ancient medicine and it’s a no brainer why athletes are in love with it! If you are feeling any of these symptoms or illness contact us today so you can be on your way to a better you.

Acupuncture San Antonio Treating Arthritis at Wellness Clinic

If you have arthritis you know that it’s hard to find relieve with traditional western medicines, is acupuncture the solution for you? As you may know, arthritis is a disease that deals with joint pain and disease. There are over 100 related conditions associated and accredited to arthritis. The number one cause of disability in the U.S, with over 300,000 adults affected by it.

Some pills are toxic

Some pills are considered toxic because they affect the cellular structure of the human body in some kind of way. The worst part of this is that you are more likely taking more than one of these drugs used to treat this disease. You may start with ibuprofen and move to more powerful drugs with worst side effects. Let us look into some of these drugs.

(DMARDs) Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs

These are drugs that are not related to each other but when used together they help treat the disease. These drugs slow the process down but do not cure arthritis. Methotrexate is one of these drugs used in conjunction with others.

Side effects of Methotrexate

Some severe side effects of Methotrexate are the following, it may cause birth defects for both sexes. It also can cause liver problems such as jaundice and upper stomach pain. There is a lot more side effects associated with this medication but we are not going to name everything here. If you are interested in more side effects for Methotrexate you can go to for more info. Let’s move on to another medication taken with Methotrexate, Sulfasalazine.

Side effects of Sulfasalazine

Again we come up with upset stomach related to these types of medications. It also causes headaches and dizziness. More serious side effects but rarely can include kidney problems with painful urination and blood in the urine. We can continue to go down and continue to talk about all the side effects of the countless medications used to treat arthritis but I rather focus on the benefits of acupuncture towards this disease.

Benefits of acupuncture towards arthritis

In 2004 a study made by (NCCAM) National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), showed that reduces the pain and functional impairment of osteoarthritis

In a study perform in 2014 by Dr. Berman found that patients receiving acupuncture felt less pain after 26 weeks.

In a randomized control trial, acupressure in which no needles were involved was used on older folks with Knee Osteoarthritis. When the results were in we got to see acupuncture work like magic. In the trial, there were three categories, real acupressure, sham acupressure and the usual care administered to the older patients. The older subjects were thought to self-apply both the real acupressure and the sham technique, the usual treatment was giving by a specialist. When the results were in the real acupressure and sham improved dramatically the WOMAC pain results. By the way, WOMAC means Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index. It’s a standardized questionnaire used to measure the condition of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip. Acupressure uses the same points as acupuncture but without needles.

So there you have it folks acupuncture shows again its benefits in a controlled trail! Now, where can we go and get treated for this disease? You can come see Guadalupe Gonzales at acupuncture San Antonio wellness clinic to receive relief from this terrible but treatable disease without all the side effects from conventional medicine.
